Breath

A bird hangs between foreground background :
the sugarcane field and casuarina trees beyond,
in the intermediate hour when shadows blur
heat breaks as slats of glass piled in the room,
pond a sheet of jade takes in a breath:
the moment of inhalation when the pollens
puff their chests out, wear coloured scarfs,
smear secretions of desire; then exhale deep
as they perform a dance of procreation.
